Home electronics are best chosen by use, not by the specification sheet. Diagonal size is a function of viewing distance, not of budget. If the result falls between two sizes, choose the smaller one: an oversized screen in a small room forces the eye to travel and makes ordinary broadcast content look coarse. If the room is long and the seating is fixed, a larger diagonal is the honest answer, and no amount of picture processing will substitute for it.
Height matters as much as width. The centre of the screen should sit near eye level when seated, which usually means the lower third of the panel at roughly 60 to 90 centimetres from the floor. Above a fireplace is a common placement and rarely a good one.
The panel decides how the picture behaves in your light, not how good it is in a showroom. OLED pixels emit their own light, so black areas switch off completely; the result is strong contrast and wide viewing angles, which suits a dark room and seating spread across a sofa. LED sets use a backlight behind a liquid crystal layer, and their brightness holds up better in a bright room with windows opposite the screen. QLED is a marketing name for an LED set with a quantum dot layer, which widens colour range rather than changing the underlying technology.
Refresh rate matters for sport and games. A 60 Hz panel is enough for films and most broadcast television. A 120 Hz panel reduces motion blur and is worth the difference if the set will carry fast movement or a console. Picture modes deserve ten minutes of attention on the first evening: cinema or film mode usually tracks the source more closely than the vivid setting chosen in shops, and turning off motion smoothing is the single change most viewers notice.
Sound is where thin televisions fail, and the fix depends on the room. A soundbar is sized by the space: a small room takes a compact bar with two or three channels, while a larger room benefits from a wider bar with a separate subwoofer. Channels matter more than watts. A three channel bar with a dedicated centre speaker clarifies dialogue, which is the usual complaint about built in speakers.
Headphones split into open and closed designs. Open backed models breathe and suit a quiet room where nobody minds a little leakage; closed backed models keep sound in and outside noise out, which is the practical choice in a shared flat or on a commute. A first turntable needs a phono stage, either built into the deck or into the amplifier, and a pair of powered speakers will do the rest without a receiver.
Multiroom systems stream the same source to several rooms over the network, and they are convenient where walls are thick and cabling is impossible. A fixed installation with an amplifier and wired speakers remains the more reliable option for one room used seriously. On the video side, HDMI 2.0 carries 4K at 60 Hz and is sufficient for most viewing; HDMI 2.1 adds higher frame rates and variable refresh, which matters mainly for gaming consoles. ARC and eARC send television audio back down the HDMI cable to the soundbar, and eARC handles the higher bandwidth formats. Cable categories are printed on the jacket: look for the certification that matches the bandwidth you need rather than the thickest cable on the shelf.
The label runs from A to G, and the scale was reset in 2021 so that A is genuinely efficient rather than merely better than average. Two numbers matter: energy consumption in kilowatt hours per 1,000 hours of use, and, for televisions, the size of the screen the figure refers to. A large efficient panel can consume more than a small inefficient one, so compare like with like.
Standby consumption is the quiet cost. A set that draws half a watt in standby is unremarkable; a cluster of devices each drawing two or three watts adds up over a year. A plug in power meter costs little and settles the question in an afternoon. The same meter will show whether an old appliance is worth keeping.
Repair or replace is an economic question with an environmental edge. A television that fails at the backlight after four years is usually worth repairing, and spare parts are available for several years after a model leaves the market. A set that draws three times the energy of a current equivalent, and is already eight years old, is harder to justify. The calculation is straightforward: the cost of the repair against the cost of a new unit plus its running cost over the years you expect to keep it.
Write the room down before opening a browser. Distance from sofa to wall, window direction, how many people listen, and whether the set is on all day or for an hour after dinner. Those four answers decide diagonal, panel, audio, and the energy class worth paying for.
Then check the small things that decide whether the installation works. Count the HDMI inputs you need and add one. Confirm that the soundbar and the television both support ARC or eARC. Measure the shelf for the turntable and allow room for the lid. Read the energy label, not the badge. Buying by use rather than by specification produces a room that works on the first evening and stays working for years, which is the only durability that counts.
